Structurally Sound

March 29 Concert at Detroit Repertory Theatre Combines Music, Visual Art, and Performance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, MI — Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings (DCWS) continues its Structurally Sound series with a multimedia performance featuring the Mirrored Glass Harp Trio on Sunday, March 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the historic Detroit Repertory Theatre.

The program, titled Rhythm & Texture, features the Mirrored Glass Harp Trio exploring soundscaping with lighting design and video projections drawn from the Detroit Repertory Theatre itself — amplifying the venue’s legacy of social justice through music, visuals, and immersive artistry.

Originating in Detroit and building on the legacy of Black harpists from the city, the Mirrored Glass Harp Trio redefines the possibilities of the traditional harp ensemble. Their repertoire spans a wide range of musical influences, weaving together neo-soul, jazz, blues, classical traditions, and global musical styles. The evening will feature reinterpretations of iconic works alongside original compositions and collaborative improvisation, including arrangements inspired by Detroit’s musical heritage and the spiritual jazz tradition of Alice Coltrane.

One highlight of the performance includes Ariel Sol’s reimagining of Diana Ross’s Motown anthem “I’m Coming Out,” opening the concert with a vibrant tribute to Detroit’s musical legacy. The program also introduces elements of Pulse of the City, Mirrored Glass’s interdisciplinary initiative exploring connections between sound, technology, and community engagement. During select moments in the performance, audience participation will help shape the sonic environment in real time, transforming the performance space into a shared creative experience.

The March 29 performance features Ackeem Salmon, Ahya Simone, and Ariel Sol, with Ariel Sol appearing as Featured Young Artist.

The setting for the performance carries its own powerful history. Founded in 1957, the Detroit Repertory Theatre is Michigan’s oldest alternative professional theatre and has long been recognized as a national leader in community-centered and socially conscious theatre.

Over the decades, the Repertory has played a significant role in Detroit’s cultural life, championing interracial casting, socially relevant storytelling, and neighborhood revitalization. With support from organizations such as the Kresge Foundation, the theatre completed major renovation and expansion projects that helped stabilize and strengthen its surrounding neighborhood. In 1986, the Detroit Repertory Theatre received the Governor’s Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Theatre Arts, recognizing its innovation and artistic excellence.

Today the theatre continues to operate with strong audience support and a deep commitment to artistic relevance, presenting more than 130 performances each year in its 194-seat theatre.

“This season we’re inviting audiences to Hear • Here—to experience music not just as sound, but as something shaped by the places where we gather,” said Bridget Favre, Marketing Director of Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings. “Performing at the Detroit Repertory Theatre allows us to connect music with a space that has long stood for artistic courage and social justice in Detroit.”

Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings is celebrating its 44th season of presenting chamber music across Metro Detroit, bringing together many of the region’s leading musicians and exploring distinctive venues throughout the city.

If you’d like, I can also give you one extra sentence that will make this PR more attractive to Detroit media outlets (Free Press, Metro Times, Model D, etc.) by leaning more into Motown + Alice Coltrane + audience participation—those are the hooks that reporters tend to pick up.
