DCWS Presents Woven Air in Nightnotes Series Performance

Friday, March 6, 2026 | 7:30 PM | Hagopian World of Rugs, Birmingham

Birmingham, MI — Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings (DCWS) continues its 44th season, Hear • Here, with Woven Air, an evening devoted to the expressive power and versatility of the clarinet. Taking place Friday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Hagopian World of Rugs in Birmingham, this Nightnotes performance brings together three musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for a program spanning more than two centuries of music.

Clarinetist Jack Walters is joined by DSO African-American Fellow Triniti Rives, cellist Jeremy Crosmer, and pianist Zhihua Tang for a richly varied program that moves from the Classical elegance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Trio, Op. 11 to the driving rhythmic landscape of Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint. Along the way, audiences will hear pieces such as Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Two Clarinets, Felix Mendelssohn’s Concert Piece No. 2, and Nino Rota’s Trio.  Selections by George Gershwin add a distinctly American perspective, blending classical structure with jazz influence.

Together, the program offers music from the Classical, Romantic, twentieth-century, and contemporary traditions, showcasing the clarinet in varied chamber settings offering audiences a panoramic view of the instrument’s voice.  Offering audiences an opportunity to hear This program really shows the clarinet’s ability to transform,” said Jack Walters. “It can sing with warmth and intimacy, sparkle with agility in dialogue, or pulse with modern rhythmic energy. I hope audiences leave hearing the instrument in a completely new way—recognizing just how many colors and characters it can embody.”

Set in the unique and inviting space of Hagopian World of Rugs, Nightnotes concerts are designed to offer chamber music at its most personal—up close, conversational, and immersive.
