Conrad Cornelison, DSO’s principal bassoon, takes the stage for DCWS season opener

DETROIT (Aug. 29, 2023) – Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings kicks off its new season with Conrad Cornelison, principal bassoon of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. On October 18 at 7:30 p.m., Cornelison will present a concert at Hagopian World of Rugs in Birmingham. Doors open at 7pm.

Joined by his wife and oboist Xiodin Liu, as well as Detroit Symphony Orchestra clarinetist Jack Walters, Cornelison’s concert will include works by Robert Schumann, Amy Beach, Felix Mendelssohn and more.

Cornelison joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2022, making him the first new DSO principal bassoon since 1974.

Before joining the Detroit Symphony, Cornelison served with the Jacksonville Symphony in the same position since 2017. While living in Florida, he also served as the adjunct professor of bassoon at the University of North Florida from 2017 to 2022. Prior to his work in Jacksonville, he held positions with the Houston Grand Opera, the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony of Southeast Texas.

Cornelison’s concert will kick off the 2023-2024 DCWS season. As part of the Nightnotes series, the concert is one of five presented by DCWS that takes place at Hagopian World of Rugs. The Nightnotes series is known by audiences as a casual space where musicians have the freedom to curate concerts with their peers, performing musical works they personally enjoy.

This will be Cornelison’s first Nightnotes performance.

This year, the series welcomes artists like bassoonist Marcus Schoon and guitarist Al Ayoub on October 27, DSO English horn player Monica Fosnaugh on March 1, a Western Michigan University brass quintet on April 12, and DSO horn player Scott Strong and concertmaster Robyn Bollinger on May 17.

The Nightnotes series is just one of three concert series that comprise the DCWS season. The Signature series and Structurally Sound series both consist of six and three concerts respectively. They attract their own audience base through interesting programming in remarkable venues.

Tickets to the 2023-24 DCWS season are currently on sale at detroitchamberwinds.org/performances/

They can also be purchased over the phone at 248-559-2095 between Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
