Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings welcomes new and old traditions with two brass concerts.

DETROIT (November 20, 2023)With the holiday season quickly approaching, Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings returns with new spins on its own seasonal tradition. On December 2 and 10, DCWS presents Holiday Brass at Royal Oak First United Methodist Church and St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church respectively. Both concerts begin at 3 p.m.

This year is the 40th annual Holiday Brass concert. Beginning in 1983, the concert has become an audience favorite for its blend of both holiday classics and new arrangements. Performing on the concerts will be 12 musicians, as well as student choirs from Stoney Creek High School and Ann Arbor Pioneer High School choirs.

The choirs will perform classic holiday works, like “O Come All Ye Faithful.” In addition to the familiar favorites are newer compositions, including a piece written by Stoney Creek High School Choir Director Brandon Ulrich.

Complementing these yearly traditions is a new collaboration with the Progressive Art Studio Collective, also known as PASC, which is a program of Services to Enhance Potential, dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance individual career paths in the art and design fields.

Eight to ten artworks from PASC artists will be displayed and on sale at the concert on December 2. Proceeds from the art sale with go toward PASC and the artists.

“We are excited to begin a new collaboration with our friends at PASC, which we anticipate will extend beyond this concert,” said Maury Okun, DCWS president. “We are incredibly moved by the mission of the program and are eager to provide a platform to showcase the talents of their artists.”

Holiday Brass is the last concert of 2023 for DCWS and is part of the organization’s Signature Series, concerts centered around providing a traditional chamber music experience to audiences in stunning venues across metropolitan Detroit.

Following Holiday Brass, DCWS will continue its concert season in the new year with nine additional concerts from February 10 to July 20.

Tickets to Holiday Brass, as well as the remainder of our season, are currently on sale and available at www.detroitchamberwinds.org/performances
