Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings returns to the Motown Mansion for a live dance-themed concert
DETROIT (March 25, 2022)—Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings returns to the Motown Mansion for its next Structurally Sound concert. On April 10, 2022, at 3 p.m., oboist Alex Kinmonth and pianist Rudolf Ozolins will perform dance selections in the ballroom of the Motown Mansion (918 W. Boston Boulevard Detroit, Mich. 48202).
The concert, approximately 90 minutes long, includes Madeline Dring’s Italian Dance, the Corelli-Barbirolli Concerto, Michael Head’s Three Pieces for oboe and piano and William Grant Still’s Incantation and Dance.
The Structurally Sound series is part concert, part historical presentation, connecting musical performances to venues across metro-Detroit. The series challenges musicians to create a program centered around the history and significance of a location.
This is the second Structurally Sound concert hosted at the Motown Mansion for DCWS. In April 2021, the organization presented a virtual concert in the mansion, curated by bassoonist Jeff Lyman. The virtual presentation included a tour of the home presented by owner Alan Brown. The video remains available for viewing on YouTube.
The series has presented concerts in other venues, including Pewabic Pottery, the Ford Piquette Plant, the Redford Theatre and 333 Midland.
The Motown Mansion is a historic building located in the Boston-Edison District. The building does not have a handicap-accessible entrance and has a flight of stairs leading to the ballroom. For patrons who believe this may be a concern for them, they are recommended to call 248-559-2095 or email info@detroitchamberwinds.org to receive accommodations.
The 2021-22 Structurally Sound series is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. This concert is sponsored by Andrea Wulf. As a DCWS musician, Alex Kinmonth is sponsored by Gwen and Richard Bowlby.
Following this concert, DCWS has three concerts remaining as part of its 40-year anniversary season. On May 20, DSO flutists Amanda Blaikie and Hannah Hammel will be joined by DSO percussionist Jay Ritchie for a presentation of works for flutes and marimba. On June 25, DCWS musicians will perform at the Seligman Performing Arts Center for the 2022 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. The season will complete with a concert built around Brahm’s Opus 40, in celebration of the completion of 40 years of DCWS.
