Today our spotlight is on the cello. The cello is thought to be the instrument that most closely resembles the human voice. Wesley Hornpetrie gives us an introduction to the instrument through our virtual petting zoo. Wesley is a local area musician who plays with the all-female ensemble Virago and the cello quartet Hole in the Floor.

Learning About the Saxophone with a Virtual Instrument Petting Zoo by BethAnne Kunert!

On top of being a stellar Development Manager for DCWS, BethAnne Kunert is also a skilled saxophonist. From graduating from the University of Michigan and co-founding the all-female chamber ensemble Virago to sharing her knowledge of music with the youth, BethAnne is a dynamic force in our music community. Amanda Blaikie performs “Ode to Joy”

Beethoven’s 9th symphony is his the final complete symphony and is regarded by many as one of the greatest achievements in the history of western music. Composed between 1822 and 1824, it is one of the most performed symphonies in the world. The piece was heard through monumental points in history. From protesting the Tiananmen Square Massacres to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall- it was used as a universal message of hope. DCWS’ own Amanda Blaikie performs the 4th and final movement, also known as the Ode to Joy. We hope this little bit of sunshine brightens up your grey, Michigan day
