Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings Presents ‘Structurally Sound’ at Detroit Public Theatre on April 13

DETROIT, MI (March 2025) — Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings (DCWS) will present the next installment of its Structurally Sound series on April 13 at 3 p.m. at Detroit Public Theatre (DPT). The concert, co-sponsored by Mary Brevard, Karen Stankye, and the Peck Foundation, is part of the organization’s 43rd season, Sonic Journeys

Structurally Sound integrates music with the physical and cultural history of its performance spaces. This program features Timothy McAllister (saxophone), Robert White (trumpet), and Liz Ames (piano) in a collaboration with Detroit Public Theatre’s spoken word artists. One of the works the musicians will perform is Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City.” Other performance pieces are inspired by commissioned monologues from Detroit-based playwrights Shawntai Brown, T.Tara Turk-Haynes, and Kendra Ann Flournoy, brought to life by local actors.

“Detroit Public Theatre is an incredible artistic space, and we are thrilled to present this unique performance that merges music and spoken word in an intimate setting,” said Maury Okun, DCWS president. “This program highlights the intersection of chamber music and theatrical storytelling.”

Following the concert, audience members are invited to attend a free reception hosted by Viking Cruises and Culture Traveler. This special gathering provides an opportunity to reflect on the performance, engage with fellow attendees.

Detroit Public Theatre: A New Home for the Arts

Detroit Public Theatre, located at 3960 Third Avenue, has rapidly become a cornerstone of the city’s performing arts scene. Originally an automotive repair shop and later an English muffin factory, the venue was most recently transformed into a 200-seat black-box theater. As part of a thriving Midtown Detroit arts district, DPT produces nationally recognized plays and programs featuring world-class writers, directors, actors, and designers.

“As fellow members of Detroit’s arts community, we are excited to introduce audiences to this dynamic space while celebrating its growth and evolution,” said Okun.
