DCWS’ Nightnotes concert brings the community together for Monica Fosnaugh’s series debut

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (February 6, 2024) Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings invites the community to welcome oboist and English hornist Monica Fosnaugh for their Nightnotes concert debut. On March 1 at 7:30 p.m., she will be joined by fellow musicians for a performance at Hagopian World of Rugs in Birmingham (850 S Old Woodward Ave, Birmingham, MI 48009)

Fosnaugh, a DCWS and Detroit Symphony Orchestra musician, will be joined by horn player Scott Strong, a fellow musician at DCWS and the DSO, and Emily Yap Chua, professor of music at Randolph College. The trio will perform works by J.S. Bach, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Carlo Yvon and Carl Reinecke.

The Nightnotes series is an opportunity for musicians to curate concerts that inspire them, pulling together musicians they enjoy performing with, to present a concert that is truly their own. The series is known for its intimate, casual environment, breaking barriers between the artist and audience.

Light snacks and refreshments are part of the experience at Nightnotes, and audiences have the opportunity to ask the performers questions.

“Nightnotes have become so popular because they provide concert goers with a unique opportunity to experience our community’s finest musicians in a fashion that is up close and personal,” said Maury Okun, DCWS president. “Our audience comes away musically satisfied, with a sense of who the musicians are as people.”

Fosnaugh was appointed to the English Horn position of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2012 by Leonard Slatkin. Prior to joining the DSO, Fosnaugh held positions with the New Haven Symphony, the Syracuse Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic and the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder.

Subsequent to this performance, DCWS will host two additional Nightnotes concerts as part of its 2023-24 season. On April 12, DCWS trumpeter Robert White will lead a brass quintet from Western Michigan University. The performance will include the premiere of a new quintet by composer George Lewis.

On May 17, hornist Scott Strong will return to Nightnotes for his own performance, joined by DSO concertmaster Robyn Bollinger. Together, they’ve created a mixed program of horn and violin, including Brahms’ Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano.”

Tickets to the March 1 concert are still available and on sale at https://detroitchamberwinds.org/performance/friday-night-with-monica-fosnaugh/
