Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings Celebrates Music and Community This Holiday Season with Two Brass Concerts
DETROIT (November 19, 2024) –
Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings invites audiences to embark on Sonic Journeys through the holiday season at their annual Holiday Brass Concerts on December 6 at Christ Church Cranbrook (7 p.m.) and December 14 at St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church (11 a.m.). The holiday season evokes feelings of nostalgia and community- celebrate it with DCWS through music and fellowship.
Since its inception in 1983, Holiday Brass concerts have become a community favorite as DCWS musicians blend both festive tunes and creative new arrangements. This year’s first Holiday Brass concert marks our return to Christ Church Cranbrook, in which DCWS performed from 1984 to 2002. Joining us will be student choirs from Stoney Creek High School, Rochester High School, and Rochester Adams High School. The choirs will perform classic holiday works like O Magnum Mysterium, traditionally sung in Latin since the Middle Ages and Lully, Lulla, Lullay conducted by Choir Director Dr. Brandon Ulrich.
Complementing this homecoming is a performance at St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Detroit on December 14, at 11 a.m. Built in 1926 and merged in 1971,the church features vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, Pewabic tile and a warm community spirit! This festive performance will also feature the Pioneer High School Choir, under the direction of Steven R. Lorenz.
Darlene Williams, a church administrator, shared her thoughts: “The Holiday Brass concerts are marvelous, the music is so beautiful and I love working with the staff of DCWS.” These sentiments are mutually expressed when patrons visit the SMSJ community.
Both concerts will conclude with a performance of “Joy”, a work for brass and choir commissioned by DCWS from Scott Boerma, who will conduct the concerts. Additionally, Baritone Rolfe Dauz, with whom DCWS has worked with on several occasions in recent years, will be a featured soloist.
Holiday Brass is the last concert of 2024 for DCWS and is part of the organization’s Signature Series concerts, which highlights traditional chamber music experiences in stunning venues across metropolitan Detroit. Following Holiday Brass, DCWS will continue its theme of Sonic Journeys in the new year with seven additional concerts from January 24 to June 8.
Tickets to Holiday Brass, as well as the remainder of our season, are currently on sale and available at www.detroitchamberwinds.org/performances
