Yu-Ming Ma
Born in Taiwan, violinist Yu-Ming (Andrew) Ma began his musical journey at the age of five and has performed widely as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player.
As a soloist, Ma has appeared with various orchestras. Notable performances include Chausson’s Poème with the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, and violin concertos by Dvořák and Tchaikovsky with the SiungSong Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Wen-Pin Chien in Taiwan.
His chamber music experience spans leading festivals such as the Encore Chamber Music Festival, Kneisel Hall, Taos Chamber Music Festival, and the 2024 Music@Menlo International Program. In February 2020, he was invited by noted violinist Jinjoo Cho to perform as a guest artist at the Tongyeong International Music Festival in Korea. In 2025, his group, the Resi Quartet, won second prize at the 12th Annual Coltman Chamber Music Competition.
As an orchestral musician, Ma served as principal second violin during the 50th Anniversary of the New York String Orchestra Seminar in 2018. He frequently led the Shepherd School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras as concertmaster and has
performed with the Houston Symphony as a substitute violinist since 2022. In September 2025, he joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as a section violinist.
Ma’s principal teachers include Todor Pelev, Ivan Ženatý, Jinjoo Cho, Jan Sloman, and Jaime Laredo. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Master of Musdic degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Rice University under the tutelage of Paul Kantor.
