Ryan Turano
Ryan Turano joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2025 as their contrabassoonist. Previously, he served as acting contrabassoonist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, and he served in the same role with the Louisiana Philharmonic before that. Hailing from Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Turano began playing the bassoon at the age of 12. In the spring of 2020, Turano earned his Bachelor of Music degree while studying with Richard Svoboda at the New England Conservatory. He would then earn his Master of Music degree at the Colburn School under the tutelage of Richard Beene. Other notable teachers include Donna Taub and Peter Unterstein.
Turano has participated in multiple summer festivals, including the Sunflower Music Festival and the Buzzards Bay Music Festival. While a student, he was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and the Aspen Music Festival. In May of 2023, Turano won first prize in the Sherman Walt Merit Competition.
As an orchestral musician, Turano has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in South America and Europe, including the Berlin Konzerthaus, Dvořák Hall, the Mozarteum, the Zoltán Kodály Center, the Musikverein, and the Concertgebouw.
