Ian Maser

A native of Tallahassee, Florida, Ian Maser is the Principal Trombonist of the Santa Fe Opera, a position he has held since 2024, after playing one season as acting Second Trombone in 2023. Previously, Ian has held Principal Trombone positions with the Dallas Opera, the Charlottesville Opera, and was acting Principal Trombone of the Detroit Opera for the 2023-2024 season. 

Ian holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Norman Bolter. During his time in Boston, Ian held positions as the Principal Trombone of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Second Trombone of the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Trombone of Symphony in C, and was a guest with the Boston Symphony and Pops Orchestra.

After his time in Boston, Ian served as acting Assistant Principal Trombone of the North Carolina Symphony for the 2017-2018 season and completed the Sarasota Orchestra’s 2018-2019 season as acting Second Trombone in the spring of 2019, and was acting Assistant Principal Trombone in the Nashville Symphony for the 2022-2023 season. An active freelancer, Ian has also played as a guest musician with the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Detroit, St. Louis, Dallas, Fort Worth, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Oregon, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Jacksonville, Richmond symphonies.

Previous summer engagements have included the Spoleto Festival Orchestra (USA), Lucerne Festival Academy, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, National Repertory Orchestra and Pacific Music Festival. In the summer of 2016, Ian joined the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for their Japan tour. He has been featured as a soloist with the US Army Field Band and was awarded Third Prize in the Minnesota-Zellmer Trombone Competition.
