Andrea Velasquez
Finding her voice on both the flute and piccolo, Andrea Velasquez is a versatile musician heard in a variety of orchestral and chamber ensembles. She enjoys playing collaboratively with others, which allows the creation of unique sounds and expressions for an audience’s enjoyment. She has been heard playing in the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, the Eastman Philharmonia, as well as the renowned Eastman Wind Ensemble. Andrea has also performed with the Hot Springs Festival Orchestra in Arkansas, as well as Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra 2, which culminated with a side-by-side performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Verizon Hall. In 2023, Andrea was named a finalist for the National Flute Association’s Piccolo Orchestral Audition, held in Phoenix, Arizona. Recently, Andrea was a member of a quintet formed for Representation Matters, an outreach organization based in Rochester, New York, whose goal was to perform works by underrepresented composers and educate young musicians about the importance of programming this music. As a result, she hopes to raise awareness by making an effort to program pieces by underrepresented composers in her own recitals. Her undergraduate degree recital consisted mostly of works by Latin and Spanish composers, creating a unique connection between her own culture and solo music for her instruments. As a teacher, Andrea has taught flute and piccolo lessons privately, as well as at the Kingwood Community Music School, and has also been a guest flute teacher at Kingwood Park High School in Houston, Texas. She hopes to help young students navigate the early stages of playing their instrument, as well as to help grow their artistry and facilitate self expression through the flute. In the spring of 2022, Andrea received her Bachelor’s in Flute Performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York under the tutelage of Bonita Boyd and Anne Harrow, and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Piccolo Performance at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland with Philadelphia Orchestra’s Erica Peel.
