Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings Announces 2024-2025 Season: “Sonic Journeys”
Celebrating 43 Years of Chamber Music Excellence with 13 Unique Concerts
Detroit, MI – Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings (DCWS) announces its 2024-2025 season, themed “Sonic Journeys.” Marking 43 years of musical excellence, this season will feature 13 concerts that explore the power of music to bring people together. The season kicks off on September 13 at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
The theme “Sonic Journeys” invites audiences on an exploration of new music while celebrating the traditional sounds that have long defined chamber music. Through this theme, DCWS highlights the journey of musical collaboration and innovation, creating a bridge between the past and the present while immersing audiences in the diverse architectural and cultural landscape of the city.
“Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings has laid its foundation with great support from the arts and cultural community across metropolitan Detroit,” said DCWS President Maury Okun. “This season is representative of the impact collaboration has had on us.”
The season’s annual “Impact Brunch” fundraiser is on October 6 at the Heathers in Bloomfield Hills. This event will connect musicians and the community, setting the stage for the season ahead. The season features three main concert series: Nightnotes, Structurally Sound, and Signature Series.
As part of its annual tradition, DCWS will collaborate with the University of Michigan and Oberlin College and Conservatory for the young composer-in-residence and young ensemble-in-residence program. An ensemble from Oberlin will perform a new work by a composer from the University of Michigan, showcasing emerging talent in the chamber music world.
DCWS musicians are often members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) or Detroit Opera, as well as professors at esteemed institutions like the University of Michigan. They have built substantial careers as both performers and educators, enriching the cultural landscape of Detroit. The Signature Series is funded in part by the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation.
Nightnotes Series
The Nightnotes series, a familiar favorite among patrons, will continue to draw audiences into Birmingham’s Hagopian World of Rugs. This series will include the premiere of two newly commissioned works from the Resonate Project, a multi-year collaboration that explores the African Diaspora through contemporary American chamber music. More information on Resonate is available at detroitchamberwinds.org/programs/resonate/.
Structurally Sound Series
The Structurally Sound concert series will feature three performances, each held at venues that highlight the architectural and cultural history of metropolitan Detroit. This year’s concerts will be held at Progressive Arts Studio Collective, the Wright Museum, and Detroit Public Theatre, offering audiences a blend of music and historical context. The Structurally Sound series is funded in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Signature Series
The Signature Series will include the annual Holiday Brass concert, a cherished tradition that brings together an ensemble of brass musicians, two high school choir groups, and renowned conductors for two performances of holiday classics and new works.
