DCWS PRESENTS SEQUEL TO SELL-OUT PERFORMANCE
In 2006,
Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings’ popular Nightnotes series
witnessed its best-selling concert to date with “Horns
O’Plenty”, featuring the talented DSO Horn Quartet. On
Friday, April 4, DCWS welcomes the virtuosic Quartet back for
an encore performance entitled “Horns O’Plenty II”.
The concert will be held at Hagopian World of Rugs, home
of the Nightnotes series, at 850 South Old Woodward in
Birmingham. A complimentary reception will precede the concert,
beginning at 8:00 p.m.
Hand-picked
by the musicians themselves, the works featured on the program
represent the best of horn repertoire from the Baroque era to today.
Commencing with a selection of 17th-century madrigals, the
quartet will go on to showcase their master musicianship with Bach’s
intricate Fugue in C-minor.
In
homage to Austrian composer and horn player Anton Wunderer, known in
the 20th century as the “Johann Strauss of the horn
quartet”, the group will play a pair of the marches for which
he was famous. The concert will come to a close with some of Lowell
Shaw’s delightful Fripperies, sure to appeal to those
with a taste for jazz.
Discounted
advance tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students, and can be
purchased on-line at www.detroitchamberwinds.org,
or by calling 248-559-2095. Tickets will also be available at

GENIUSES AND WANNABES
Fans of the movie Amadeus will have the chance to relive its magic,
mystery, and great music as Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings
presents “Geniuses and Wannabes”, a concert
featuring works by Mozart and Salieri. The concert will be held on
Sunday, March 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Birmingham
Unitarian Church, located at 38651 Woodward Ave. in Bloomfield
Hills. A concert Preview will begin at 2:15 p.m., featuring
musicologist Steven Whiting in a presentation entitled
“Operatic Encounters”.
Antonio
Salieri, a well-respected composer in his own right, suffered from an
intense jealously of compositional master Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The end of his life found Salieri in an insane asylum, where some say
he went so far as to confess to Mozart’s murder! While we may
never know the whole truth about Mozart and Salieri’s personal
relationship, we can listen to and observe the relationship between
their compositional styles and musical inclinations. Join the DCWS
musicians for favorite Mozart selections such as Divertimento No.
3, K. 166 and La Ci Darem from the renowned opera Don
Giovanni.
Also
featured on the concert is Salieri’s Armonia per un Tempio
della Notte (“Temple of the Night”), a wafting and
ethereal piece for wind octet. Listeners can decide for themselves –
was Salieri a genius like Mozart, or just a talented wannabe? Mr.
Beethoven sides with Mozart for the evening, as concertgoers enjoy
his Variations on La Ci Darem, inspired by the aforementioned
Mozart piece of the same name.
Tickets
purchased in advance are $25 for adults, $22 for
seniors 60 and over, and $10 for students. They may be
